SRLA: Marathon 23′
“I would say that this race is 70% mental and 30% physical.”
SRLA stands for Students Run Los Angeles. This is a sport to prepare people for the Los Angeles Marathon.
These students have been training since August. There was a 5k (3.1 mile) race on Saturday, September 24, 2022. This was at Downtown LA (Homeboys Industries) where the climate was good.
There was a 10k (6.2 mile) race on Sunday, October 23, 2022. This was at La Puente where the climate was alright.
There was a 15k (9.3 miles) race on Sunday, November 13, 2022. This was at Dockweiler Beach where it was very cold, and there was an extreme amount of wind.
There was a half marathon (13.1 mile) race on December 11, 2022 at Pomona Fairplex. These runners are often running in cold climates, however this race was in the rain! Places were flooded, there was heavy rainfall, and the wind was against them! Yet, they still completed the race. This goes to show how tough these SRLA runners are.
There was another half marathon (13.1 mile) race on Sunday, January 15, 2023 at the Rose Bowl. There was a slight drizzle and the weather was cold.
Then they ran a 30k (18.6 mile) race on Sunday, February 12, 2023. The course felt as if these runners were on a treadmill, however this is to prepare for how long the marathon will be.
There will be an optional SRLA Spring into Summer 5k race Sunday, May 7, 2023 at Boyle Heights.
These runners have been training for months for this moment. Many people’s bucket list is to do a marathon, and these people are doing it at such a young age.
The Los Angeles Marathon is a 42km (26.2 mile) course. The course previous years was starting at the Los Angeles Dodger Stadium and ending at the Santa Monica Pier. However, this year these runners are starting at the Los Angeles Dodger Stadium and ending at Beverly Hills High School.
SRLA runner, Sara Rojo, says “I feel nervous but excited to conquer it.”
SRLA runner, Vanessa Rosales, says “I am excited and looking forward to completing my third marathon.”
SRLA runner, Erick Mata, states that “This is going to be my third official marathon, and it’s more of a mental game than it is physical. I would say that this race is 70% mental and 30% physical. If you stay open minded then you’ll be able to finish the race. I ran this course last year and it was pretty rigorous after the 20th mile. However, I still vaguely remember the course. So, I feel much more confident in my abilities to run this race. If I did it once I can do it again.”
