This school year’s spirit week was definitely one of a kind! ASB crafted the theme Scooby Doo Spooky Island just in time for the month of October.
Like any other year, students come up with clever ideas to dress the part. However, there are some who still struggle with school spirit because they personally cannot connect with the particular day.
For the week, ASB designed Y2K Day Monday, Anything But a Backpack Day Tuesday, Scooby Doo Day Wednesday, Neon versus Dark Thursday, and Barbie Day Friday, in light of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Johnny Estrada, a sophomore at North Hollywood High School, honestly expressed, “Spirit week personally for me… I didn’t really dress up, it just wasn’t my favorite. It was decent, but it wasn’t my favorite.”
There were some hot takes on particular days as well. Including, senior Victoria Espinosa, who shared, “I liked the different colored ones, but the ‘Anything But a Backpack Day’ didn’t have anything to do with Scooby Doo.”
However, there were those who happily participated all week. Senior Luis Bernal said, “When I saw the first spirit week I was interested in how things were going to go, until I saw they took inspiration from everyone who commented on their flaws [of the original spirit week]. I dressed up every single day.”
Bernal proudly speaks on his outfit for Friday in a sing-songy voice, “I had a Ken outfit for Friday.” In which Bernal put on a blond wig and a life size Barbie doll box.
Other students comment on the creativity of this year’s spirit week. Jacob Vasquez, a junior, says, “Spirit week was a very creative approach for the spooky season. I liked the ‘Scooby Doo Day’ the most.”
Nevertheless, spirit week speaks to many people. Senior, Adriana Hernandez comments, “Overall, Scooby Doo was a fun choice as the theme for pep rally…Towards the end, everybody participated and pinked out [on Friday].”
