Travis Scott’s latest album Utopia dropped on July 28th, a long 5 years after his previous solo project Astroworld. While I always had a few songs in my rotation throughout the years, it was really this past year, where, through artists like Metro Boomin alongside recommendations from my friends, when I really began to frequently listen to his songs. I remember I was eating some Chick-fil-a before playing the album at exactly 9pm. As the first few songs such as “Hyaena,” “Thank God,” “Modern Jam,” and “My Eyes” played, I was instantly hooked.
About a month later, he announced that he was going on tour and would be visiting LA on November 5th. My friends and I couldn’t be more excited, buying tickets the moment they dropped on Ticketmaster. While we considered getting floor (standing) tickets, we decided against it due to their cost and the numerous incidents that had happened at Travis concerts and festivals.
As the days passed, my excitement and anticipation continued building. I remember on my way to Sofi Stadium the slowness of traffic and how everything seemed to take forever. After we made it through all the crowds, we had finally made it to our seats in the 200s section.
Around 8pm, when the show was destined to start, Teezo Touchdown came out as the opener for the show. After performing for around 30 minutes (a performance that I didn’t particularly enjoy), he left the stage at 8:40. We would have to wait another hour for Travis to come out. After what seemed like forever, Travis came out performing “Hyaena.”
I thoroughly enjoyed the performance. One of the highlights included “Fe!n,” where Travis brought out Playboi Carti to perform the song with him. “90210,” while cut too short in my opinion, was a crazy sensation with the entire area having their phone flashlights on. Songs like “No Bystanders,” “Sicko Mode,” and “Goosebumps” brought out so much energy from the crowd, everyone was jumping/raging even in the seated sections.
When the concert ended, I was left unsatisfied. Whether that was up to the LA exclusive tee selling out at numerous booths or Travis’s late arrival time, as I walked back to my car, I was left wanting more. But as the time went on, as my friends and I had our 1am In-n-Out meal, we reflected on our experience.
As I spent the next hours and days thinking about it, I realized that I had set my expectations too high. All the anticipation meant that anything Travis did probably wouldn’t live up to my expectations. He would never play only the songs that I liked or wanted. In hindsight, looking back at all the videos I took, it was probably one of the greatest experiences of my life and something I would do a hundred times over.
