For the first time in NHHS history, the theater class will perform their play in the cafeteria. She Kills Monsters by Qui Nguyen will be performed by the NHHS theater class. Ms. Buccolo, the theater teacher, has been hard at work getting this production on its feet with the many changes that have affected NHHS.
The first major change for the theater class is the auditorium where they normally perform is going to be torn down. Having their stage demolished, the theater class needs a new place to put on the show, and the old cafeteria by the Randolph building has become this class’s new home. Ariel Reynoso, an actor in the theater class who has acted in previous pieces, has stated “…if anything, that’s the point of theater – theater can be done anywhere at any time, you could be acting in the middle of nowhere and still be awesome.” The class has brought many valuable lessons and learning experiences to the students.
Mia Gonzalez, also an actor in the upcoming play She Kills Monsters, has felt the class has helped her personally. “It just got me out of my comfort zone, it got me a passion, a hobby that I could do at school and helped me get a lot of friends and get me out of my shell.” Along with the personal hurdles she has overcome, she has learned more valuable lessons from the class. Gonzalez says, “Sacrifice is needed to get things done, you have to work and you have to stay after school hours and everything comes easy”. Gonzalez says she feels this was a learning and bonding experience for herself and all her peers in the play.
Behind the actors are the people who build the set. Ms. Sonia and Katherine Jurado have been the ones behind the set for the past 4 weeks. From building the background to building the very platform the actors stand. Ms. Sonia is the head of the tech club and a lot of the props that will be used were made by her.
December 7th, 8th, and 9th are the days that the play will air on campus. It is simultaneously about fun and adventure while also tackling the topic of a heavy loss. She Kills Monsters will invoke every emotion you have from laughing at the jokes to feeling sympathy for Agnes while she deals with the loss of her younger sister. While this all seems out of the ordinary, it is sure to bring everyone who comes with a smile on their face.
