As winter sports conclude and the lineup continues, spring sports are the next batter up.
Huskies’ baseball had their official 2023-24 season opener on Monday, Feb. 12 at 3 p.m against Golden Valley High School.
The Huskies unfortunately lost 1-6.
Star player and captain Robert Han-Dressor, Number 11, points out the main struggle throughout the game to be, “…everyone’s mentality. It got to us. Everyone got down towards the end.”
Huskies’ baseball ended their game with a team batting average of .261 and a .414 on base percentage.
Cristian Calderon, Number 24, explained during the game their issues were, “…mental mistakes on defense. I’d say we beat ourselves tho cuz we didn’t really execute when it was needed.”
Number 1, Elijah Gaytan adds, “The other team made the adjustments faster than us which I feel we needed to work on. But we will get it together by the end of the season.”
Though the Huskies’ mentality got the best of them, they remain the phenomenal team they have always been known to be.
In the 2022-23 season, Huskies Baseball ended with a 50% win rate, having an equal 14-14 win-loss rate overall.
Huskies had ended the season strong, ranking 3rd place in the East Valley League. Huskies also advanced to the Division I 2023 CIF LA City Section Baseball Championships. However, they were unable to advance to Quarterfinals after their loss against Kennedy’s Cougars, 9-8.
This season Huskies are coming back strong with new players willing to give the game their all, and a few of last years striking all-stars. Guaranteeing they’ll make it further this year.
Calderon expresses his feelings on the season starting again, saying, “I’m excited for the season, but when I think about it, it’s kind of bittersweet because it’s gonna be my last season playing high school ball.”
Number 4, Diego Velazquez, expresses the same feelings, saying, “Season starting again is always the best. Being with the team I love. It’s also my last season as a senior so I’m trying to take in as much as I can before it’s all gone.”
This game wasn’t just a tough loss for Huskies, but an opportunity to learn from their mistakes.
Gaytan concludes a solution, “With limited field time it’s a boundary for defensive work, but we will use the time we have to lock in our defense and eliminate errors.”
Huskies are determined to practice harder in preparation for their next visitation on the field against Legacy Tigers on Feb. 15 at 3 p.m.
