Hey Huskies, for many of you reading the time has come to start thinking about getting behind the wheel. This could be a very intimidating process, and rather confusing. There are multiple steps one must take to obtain a driver’s license, and different factors such as age can affect this process.
For my huskies who are extra eager to get on the road (15 ½ – 17), you guys need to complete a California DMV Approved Driver Education before you apply for your learner’s permit.
After completing your driver’s education course it’s time to obtain a learner’s permit. You must be at least 15 ½ years old to be eligible for this. You must schedule an appointment to take this test, although walk-ins are allowed, it is more time-consuming
You’ll find an ample amount of information on the linked website about scheduling an appointment for your Learner Permit.
This test can either be taken online or on paper, depending on what you feel most comfortable with. A great way to study is the California Drivers Handbook, which includes all the information that will be on the permit test. In addition, online practice tests are a great way to get used to the testing style.
Going into the test you must bring a proper source of identification like a passport or birth certificate, social security number, along with proof of residency.
When you pass the permit test, you are required to practice with a licensed driver who is 25 years or older. This does not mean that you can drive whenever you want, you must abide by the curfew restrictions listed by the California DMV.
Along with practicing driving with a licensed adult older than 25, you must get 6 hours of training with a licensed driving instructor, if you are under the age of 18. The following are websites where one can find driving instructors: Coastline Academy and Driving lessons.
Once you have completed your hours driving with an instructor and have waited longer than 6 months from the day you have passed your permit you are ready to take your driver’s test! Make sure to schedule an appointment at your local DMV, and bring all the paperwork your driver instructor gives you.
In addition, it is highly recommended that you review the California Drivers Handbook before taking your driving test.
After you pass your driving test you will receive a temporary license, which will be a piece of paper that will act as your license. Make sure to follow the DMV’s instructions to apply for your actual driver’s license.
Remember that until you turn 18 there will be restrictions, such as how many people can be in your car and nighttime driving.
If you are 18 and want to get a driver’s license the process is much more straightforward. All that is required is for you to pass the permit test, and then you are eligible to take the driver’s test.
By following this guide you’ll have your license in no time. Good luck on your journey, and most importantly drive safely!
