With the 2024 Track and Field Season coming to an end, we are approaching the 2024 LA City Finals which will take place on Friday, May 10th, at El Camino College.
Following the end of this school’s track and field season; our Huskies who have qualified for City Finals are looking forward to competing at the meet on Friday.
Catalina Howells a HGM senior, is a captain of our Track and Field team who competes in high jump. Howells added, ”I’m kinda nervous, but I’m also excited. I really wanted to make it to city finals and I’m super happy that I did!”
By competing in the LA City Finals meet, our athletes are able to compete for medals, which are given to those who place top six in each event. For those who place top three; they are awarded with the opportunity to compete at the State CIF Track and Field meet.
Eli Gonzales, a SAS junior — also one of the captains of our 2024 Varsity Track and Field team, will be representing NHHS by competing in the triple jump event. Gonzales comments, “I feel excited for cities, as it’s a place to prove yourself in front of the best. It’s your gateway to the state meet and a long track career.”
Gonzales, among his other teammates, is looking forward to City Finals, in which he says, “I hope to get to States or earn medals in cities.”
Howells adds, “My goal for this season was basically just to do well in high jump, I particularly wanted to be league champion for it and then make it to city finals. Now, my goal is to medal at the city finals.”
Our track and field team is focused ahead, as they are preparing for this event, where athletes get to prove themselves by competing against other athletes who are some of the best in all of the LA City Section. When asked how he is preparing for the meet, Gonzales added, “Hitting weights and cranking out sprint reps and getting enough sleep helps me prepare.”
City finals are a very exciting meet that only the best athletes from Track and Field attend. While it is exciting, it may be quite nerve racking for our husky track and field members. However, our huskies are focused ahead on the next meet, which is always an important meet in one’s high school career.
Chase Guillory (junior), competing in long jump, mentioned, “I feel nervous, but I am ready for city finals, and I am excited to be competing. My goal for this upcoming meet is to qualify for the state preliminaries that are happening next week.”
The LA City Finals are approaching this Friday at El Camino College, in Crenshaw, Los Angeles, and it is a perfect opportunity for our huskies to capitalize on their 2024 Track and Field season, which is coming to an end as we get closer to city finals.
